Derby City Council Adult Learning Service has just opened a new learning facility for the residents of Derby. The former Normanton Infants School has been refurbished with a £636,000 grant from the LSC to provide an all purpose learning venue.

The new Village Learning Centre was officially opened on 15th May as part of Adult Learners' Week by Councillor Ruth Skelton, Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Health.

It will provide excellent facilities for a wide range of adult learning activities. There will be a specialist art room with a pottery kiln and bespoke display fixtures, a hall that can accommodate up to 60 people and several smaller teaching rooms. An 18 place crèche with indoor and outdoor play areas will provide care for children up to the age of five whilst their parents attend courses.

Councillor Skelton said: "The new centre will provide excellent facilities for adults who want to gain qualifications, improve their job prospects or simply have the pleasure of learning something new. As a result of the economic downturn more people are becoming interested in developing new skills and are finding that they have more time available."

"There has been community involvement in this project from its outset. Local residents have formed a focus group, met with the architect to choose colour schemes and designs and have advised the adult learning service about the range of courses to be offered."

Kevin McCann, Partnership Director from Derbyshire LSC said, "It's exciting to see the centre opened and running. The primary focus will be to help adults to gain new skills and confidence through different learning activities. Learners may progress to courses leading towards qualifications and support will also be given to increase employability skills."
