Extra skills help to get people back into work
The colleges have been given a share of £83 million nationally to offer up to 75,000 high quality and flexible training places for jobs that are still available and to prepare people for the new jobs that will emerge in the recovery. This funding is in addition to the £100 million previously announced Redundancy Response support, which helps people facing the imminent prospect of being made redundant through the first six months of unemployment if appropriate.
To ensure the courses remain focussed on the labour market, they will be flexible both in terms of when they are available and how long they last. Courses will be offered on a roll on roll off basis and of varying durations to accommodate employer requirements. Where a learner is able to secure a job before completing their learning, it will be possible for them to continue their learning once in work to go on and obtain a qualification.
Regional Minister Phil Hope said: "This additional support will go a long way to bring real help to people in the East Midlands."
"It will help people with the problems they face now, it will help them to develop their employability and help ensure they can take advantage of the opportunities that the upturn, when it comes, will bring."
Over the last decade colleges have developed into an important resource for their local communities making a real contribution to improving the skills and employability of local people. This funding is intended to build on and extend Colleges work to date and enhance their impact in response to the economic downturn. This new offer will stimulate and support colleges to quickly develop the necessary links to help local people start learning, get a job and continue in learning in work.
The East Midlands colleges to receive a share of the funding are: Boston College; Brooksby Melton College; Castle College; Chesterfield College; Derby College; Grantham College; Leicester College; Lincoln College; Loughborough College; Moulton College; New College Stamford; New College Nottingham; Northampton College; South East Derbyshire College; South Leicestershire College; South Nottingham College; Stephenson College; Tresham Institute; University of Derby; West Nottinghamshire College.
