Robin gets dream career
Chesterfield College has helped Robin Wilson, 28, to return to work in his dream career after losing his job. Robin had worked in the manufacturing industry for six and a half years before being made redundant. Jobcentre Plus recommended a Chesterfield College re-training initiative to Robin. After signing up with the College, Robin is now beginning a dream job at leading learning disability charity, Mencap.
During his time in the manufacturing industry Robin always felt he was missing out on something, he never felt satisfied with his career choice. When one of Robin`s friends began work in the care sector, this proved to be Robin’s inspiration.
During his visit to Jobcentre Plus, staff notified Robin of an initiative at Chesterfield College which provides anyone out of work for six months or more with training for no cost. Thinking of his friend working in the care sector, the opportunity to re-train in the sector particularly caught his eye.
"As soon as I met with the college staff they were really encouraging, motivating me to take the plunge and start a short course in health and care. They provided me with so much information and options that I felt compelled to re-train at the college. I approached the thought of returning to education with an ‘I`m not sure I can do this’ attitude but the college’s staff convinced me that I am more than capable."
As Robin started the course, a support worker role came up with the Chesterfield branch of learning disability charity, Mencap, and Robin decided to apply for it. The College provided Robin with advice and guidance on how to prepare his CV as well as enhance his interview skills. "Being on the College course really impressed the team at Mencap and coupled with the advice that the College gave me, ultimately led to a successful interview. I`m sure that if it wasn`t for the encouragement and motivation from the college I wouldn`t have been offered the job."
Whilst beginning his career with Mencap, the course at Chesterfield College allows Robin the flexibility to fit his training around the job. Robin concludes, "I`m really looking forward to getting stuck into the course and in the future, if I need any further training I will have no hesitation in returning."
